Culpeper County

Cheri Woodard Realty’s Area Guide to the County

Where the Tidewater coastal plain meets the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains

Historically a small farming community, Culpeper County’s fertile land has sustained a rich agricultural economy for hundreds of years. Now the economy is more diversified and lively but the traditions and values of a small community are still very much alive.

There are numerous little villages scattered across Culpeper County but the Town of Culpeper is the social and commercial center of attention. Its lively downtown area features galleries, bakeries, breweries, boutiques, and gourmet shops. Downtown Culpeper has at least a dozen excellent dining spots and several delightful diners. It also has an impressively restored art deco theatre which hosts an eclectic schedule of music and live performances.

The Town has a population of approximately 17,000 people but only a few miles past its limits are wide expanses of farmland and deep forests. The topography is laced with mountain streams, rapid rivers, and large lakes. Northwestern Culpeper County offers breathtaking panoramic mountain views.

Culpeper’s countryside is home to a wide variety of equestrian activities. Commonwealth Park is one of the state’s largest equestrian facilities and, in addition to Kelly’s Ford Equestrian Center, Commonwealth Park hosts a variety of national horse shows and special events throughout the year.

Culpeper real estate ranges from grand antebellum homes and large estates to charming little farms, cabins, and cottages. Although Culpeper is a little more populated than its surrounding counties, it is still possible to find a secluded spot along a river or a private property on a ridge featuring majestic mountain views.
