Fauquier County features magnificent scenery, small towns, and some of the most prestigious estates in the U.S. A drive through its countryside reveals manicured pastures behind old stone walls and can lead to the 27 outstanding wineries scattered across the county. Fauquier’s wineries are some of the best in Virginia, competing favorably with wines from around the world.

The villages of The Plains, Middleburg, Upperville, Paris, and Marshall offer interesting boutiques, wine and gourmet shops, and a wide range of places to dine. The Ashby Inn in Paris is one of the best restaurants in the Washington DC area and the Red Truck Bakery in Marshall has earned a national reputation for their wonderful pies, cakes, and other baked treats.

One of the most impressive equestrian facilities in Fauquier is Great Meadow, a 250-acre fields event center and steeplechase course. Great Meadow hosts the Virginia Gold Cup and the International Gold Cup, two of the premier steeplechase events in the U.S. From May through September Great Meadow also features Twilight Polo at Great Meadow, an event best accompanied by a picnic dinner and local wine.

Throughout the Spring several other remarkable venues throughout Fauquier County host point-to-point races. In Upperville the oldest and most impressive horse show in America, The Upperville Colt and Horse Show, takes place every June.
