Old Firehouse Hill was the original homeplace of Charlie Gasch, one of Castleton’s largest landowners and most community spirited citizens. He built the old farmhouse and then realizing the community needed a fire department, he erected the original Castleton Firehouse adjacent to his home. Now the farmhouse and old firehouse have been remodeled, restored and repurposed as a fantastic family compound with a pool, pond, lovely landscaping and lush lawns. It is quiet, private and the night sky is aglow with the milky way.
The original c. 1912 farmhouse has been enlarged to accommodate a gourmet kitchen, generous great room and outdoor spaces that beckon with gardens, shade and cool breezes. This newer portion of the home has high ceilings, skylights and wide windows for an expansive airy atmosphere. The kitchen has a 4-burner gas range, granite countertops, a double wall oven, wood cabinets and a walk-in pantry with plenty of storage.
The original portion of the old farmhouse includes a splendid main floor master suite, complete with its own washer & dryer, and a comfortable den/office with fireplace. Up an ingeniously painted staircase, there are two more bedrooms, a full bath and a laundry room. Thoughtful updates, additions, and improvements have been made to the home over the years. This 100-year old home has old-world charm, but has the modern conveniences of ample closet space and Geothermal Heat Pumps.
