About the Property
The perfect retreat…Past where the pavement ends, across the Thornton River and wind down a gravel lane and you come across this hidden gem. Designed by world famous artist, Frederick Kahler, Blackhaw Haven is an oasis for communing with nature and being inspired by the wild beauty that surrounds us.
The loft style cabin sits on a private 6.4 acre lot that is surrounded by woods. The cabin looks out on a park-like meadow bursting with specimen trees and a babbling brook that runs along the property as it meanders its way towards the Thornton River. Behind the cabin, the land starts to climb and you can hike on the remains of the old Red Oak Fire Road.
A wide front porch runs the length of the cabin and is the perfect place to while away the hours as you watch nature play in the front meadow. The porch enters into the heart of the home, a great room replete bursting with a rustic two story field stone fireplace. A small dining area sits to the right of the great room. Behind the dining room is an open kitchen with a large pantry. A wide back porch that runs the length of the home is accessible from the kitchen. The first floor is completed with a bedroom and a full bath.
A set of stairs leads you from the great room to the upstairs living area. With plenty of natural light, the open loft area made a magnificent studio. It would also make a great family room. Behind the loft, a master suite runs the length of the home. The lower level features a root cellar (which could also make a great wine cellar), several small nursery rooms perfect for getting a jump on the growing season and a large work room. The work room has a corner tub that is a perfect dog washing station. A garage completes the lower level.
Adding to the utility of the property, is a detached workshop/studio. The property also features a chicken coop with a long run, a pyramid zen garden as well as regular garden. Mature plantings surround the home adding to the mystical nature of the property.
Blackhaw Haven is easy walking distance to one of the best swimming hole in all of Rappahannock. Fishing and kayaking adventures can be easily found on the Thornton. For adventures further afield, Rappahannock and surrounding counties offer endless recreational possibilities.
