The Writer’s Cabin is a three-level log home that is private enough for a Walden-like experience but also convenient to Sperryville if you are more interested in a Moveable Feast. It has long, dramatic mountain views that morph from awesome to gently comforting depending on the light, the season and which way the wind is blowing.
Shaded by towering oaks, the cabin has enough open lawn for outdoor enjoyment, but it requires little maintenance. There is an open deck that’s the ideal spot for watching the sunset over the Blue Ridge and stargazing during the darkness of the night. A short walk down the hill is a quiet woodland pond surrounded by perennial flowers that attracts wildlife from hummingbirds to big black bears.
The wide front porch opens to a soaring great room with log walls, 20-foot ceilings, and a fieldstone fireplace with raised hearth and a massive wood mantle. It segues to a dining area and an efficient galley kitchen. Out the back door, there is a two-level covered porch with breathtaking western views of fields, forest and the Shenandoah National Park.
Behind a balcony above the great room, the master suite occupies the upper level, including an ensuite bathroom. The bedroom has a cathedral ceiling lit by a skylight.
The lower level includes two guest bedrooms and a full bath. Both bedrooms open to the private lower level porch which has outstanding views and access to the lower lawn areas.
The Writer’s Cabin is about five miles from the village of Sperryville. Recently recognized as the best small town in Virginia, Sperryville is alive with two breweries, a distillery, yoga studio, fitness center, restaurants and interesting shopping.
Rappahannock and surrounding counties offer endless recreational possibilities. Shenandoah National Park and Old Rag Mountain are nearby. The park is home to scenic Skyline Drive with its overlooks, as well as many miles of trails. There are wineries and breweries, great restaurants and cafes, antique stores, farms and orchards, and much more. Looking for cultural activities? Visit one of the many art galleries, attend a play or a concert at one of the theaters, or visit the Rappahannock Historical Society’s museum.
This location has it all: privacy, fabulous views, woods & trails, a pond and yet proximity to a main road and other towns. Culpeper is about 15 minutes south on Rt. 522 and it offers the basic big box and grocery stores as well as another array of great restaurants, movies, health care, unique boutiques and specialty stores.
